GRID REFERENCE HOW T O READ AND WRITE LOCATION WITH GRID REFERENCE Consider the Grid reference below
To write the grid reference we start with Easting then Northing: Follow the vertical line from the point which leads to Easting Then record its value and follow the Horizontal line from the point which leads to Northing then record its value The grid reference can be a 4- digit system or in a 6 - digit system For example Point D = 1535 (4-digit system) or 150350 (6-digit system) When a place or feature is located in the middle of a grid square as in the case of point G above, use the following steps: we start with Eastings as normal, but note that if we follow the vertical line down to the Eastings, we get a place between 11 and 12. so start writing 11 then subdivide the square into ten equal parts to know the exact easting location of point G as the illustration below:
By observing the magnified square above, you will find that each square has small ten equal parts. So if the location is there between two numbers, your task is to find where is the location of your point on those small parts. From our example above we found that The Easting of point G is 11 and small part we obtained as shown in the figure above is 5 so we say Easting of point G is 115 The same applied to Northings where we get 345 (refer to the grid lines above. Therefore the location of point G is 115345. Try yourself for points F, N and T *********** END ************ Related: Map scale introduction.
