NOTES CODE: NTGE160207ES What is Livestock keeping?
Livestock keeping refers to the keeping of domestic animals. Livestock include cattle, sheep , goats, camels, donkey etc. Domestic animals can also be referred to as tamed animals. Animals are kept for beef, milk and wool. Poultry are kept for meat and eggs. ADVANTAGES OF LIVESTOCK KEEPING
- Employment. People are employed in industries which produce beef and milk.
- Source of income. Selling meat, eggs, milk and also animals. - Foreign exchange when exporting animals’ products like beef and milk. - Availability of hides and skins which are used in making leather products such as shoes, - belts etc. DISADVANTAGES OF LIVESTOCK KEEPING
- Over Grazing can cause soil erosion.
- Drying up water sources
- Desertification - Deforestation for setting up ranches - Conflicts between pastoralists and cultivators as animals eat crops. - Diseases like Anthrax, Swine flue, Rift valley fever (RVF) affect human beings WAYS OF MANAGING DISADVANTAGES
- Modern ways of keeping animals should be encouraged.
- Zero grazing should be done. This means that farmers feed their livestock in their paddock without taking them out for grazing. - The number of livestock kept should be proportional to the size of field. Pastoralists should value quality and not quantity. - There should be specific areas for grazing in order to reduce conflicts between cultivators and pastoralists. - Farmers should consult veterinary officers for regular checkups and vaccination for their livestock. ************** END ******************
