ALL ABOUT INTEGERS: As it is known that, talking about integers we deal with Negative and Positive numbers together with Zero. All numbers Negative, Positive and Zero are called integers. Zero is neither negative nor positive. Example of positive integers are 21, 0.4, +300, 2/5, +9/23 etc. Example of negative integers are -321, -9.5, -3/14, - 76 etc. Integers can be represented on the horizontal or vertical number line as below: Note that, a positive integer can be written without positive sign such as 32, 0.6, 5/7, 230, 12228 etc. but it is necessary to write negative integer with its negative sign, otherwise it will be read as the positive integer. Positive integers are greater than negative integers. Example, 1 is greater than – 23455 When a negative integer becomes bigger, its value becomes smaller Example -200 is less than -10 Zero is greater than any negative integer. The opposite of Positive is negative and vice versa: Example the opposite of -23 is +23 or the opposite of 45 is - 45. The sum of the number and its opposite is zero (0). Examples: 32 + (-32) = 0 -12 + 12 = 0 +54.3 + (-54.3) = 0
COMBINING OR MULTIPLYING THE SIGNS: How do we multiply the signs? It is simple. Say: Multiplying the same signs gives positive (+) EXAMPLE: (-) x (-) = (+) and (+) x (+) = (+)
Multiplying different signs gives negative ( - ) EXAMPLE: (-) x (+) = (-) and (+) x (-) = (-)
The knowledge of multiplying the signs is very important in the operation of integers.
