COMPLEX NUMBERS

The number in the form of a + ib where a and b are real numbers and i = √-1 is called the complex number

The square root of negative number (√-a) is called the imaginary number, for example √-1, √-5, √-16 etc all are imaginary numbers.

Let P and Q be points with coordinates (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) respectively as shown above.

PQR is right angled triangle. By Pythagoras theorem:

PQ2 = PR2 + RQ2 = (x2-x1)2 + (y2 – y1)2
